Ford Goes Solar for Green Vehicles

If models like the incredible Ford Fusion Hybrid weren't proof enough, we'll make it crystal clear: Ford is planning on going green, and they're doing so in a big way. The American automaker is planning to roll out a slew of new, green, fuel-efficient vehicles in the near future, the likes of which include an electric vehicle variant of the much loved Ford Focus and a potential EV model of the already fuel-efficient Ford Fiesta. With so many green models already here, and more on the way, Ford is rolling out a new initiative to encourage green vehicle sales.

Just what is Ford planning? We here at York Ford have heard quite a bit of churning in the rumor mill as of late. But, we do know that at least one of the stories we've heard is true, which is Ford's plan to partner with solar panel manufacturer, SunPower as a part of their "Drive Green for Life" program.

As a part of this initiative, Ford will offer new EV buyers a chance to purchase a 2.5-kilowatt rooftop solar panel system, installed on a Ford owner's home at a heavy discount. "The deal itself offers solar at a drastically reduced price," says Daniel Pierce, a Ford spokesman. "We found that with state and local rebates, the complete cost of the system can be as low as $5,500 in some places."2

This new panel will be connected to the grid that recharges and monitors their EV. What's more is that this incredible system is capable of sending unused power back into the grid, so that absolutely no power is wasted in the charging process. Overall, however, Ford and SunPower's heavily discounted system is expected to charge a vehicle at an average of 1000 driving miles every month.

"Ford looked at early adopters for the electric vehicle," Pierce continued. "Those are also people who tend to be very passionate about the environment, and they also tend to be early adopters of solar power. This is a great way to help people 'green' their lives."1
