What Should an Electric Vehicle Sound Like?

Now is the perfect time to help Ford decide! The American automaker is preparing to launch their new 2012 Ford Focus EV, and they are trying to decide on an artificial sound to implement into the model.
Before we get too ahead of ourselves, maybe we should take a minute to explain. See, one of the big problems with electric vehicles is that they do not produce any distinct engine noise. While this might seem like a great feature at first, many lawmakers in Washington have begun to point out that for blind pedestrians, this presents a real problem. Since the blind can't see a car coming head on, they rely on the sound that an engine makes to tell when they are in danger. In other words: no engine sound= more danger.
In anticipating that lawmakers may soon make artificial electric vehicle sounds a requirement, they have gone ahead and started searching for the perfect sound to fit with the new Focus EV, which is set to launch at the end of the year. Here at York Ford, we are proud that Ford has decided to stay ahead of the game, implementing such a key safety feature.
But, we said that you could help Ford decide, didn't we? Yeah, we did, and here is how you can. Ford has opened up voting on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=163358687062875&set=a.123482424383835.19897.112397758825635&type=1&comments.) Make sure to vote soon! Voting is only open until the end of the month! After all, this could be a sound that you'll be hearing quite frequently from now on!
The 2012 Ford Focus EV runs only using high-voltage lithium-ion batteries (hence the lack of sound). It can reach a very competitive driving range when it is fully charged. Furthermore, Ford is making use of their new MyKey technology, which allows drivers to program certain safety features right into the vehicle's key.
But, let's talk green for a moment. This is another area where the 2012 Ford Forcus EV does not fail to please. It is equipped with a single-speed transmission, which allows the vehicle to match the high rpm range that an EV requires while also delivering quick responsiveness and smooth acceleration. It will also feature a regenerative braking system with a brake coach to help driver fully utilize it. And, those drivers who consider themselves to be eco-conscious can see how much energy they are using with the distinctive energy panel.
In the end, however, we must face facts: no matter how many green features a vehicle has, no one will want to drive it if it looks dull. But, see, that is why Ford based this hot new EV on the already popular Ford Focus. It combines the already stylish body that people love with a number of other attractive features like an optional smart phone app, customizable screens, and Sony audio with HD radio. Indeed, this is one EV that no one will mind being seen in. We know that we can't wait to show on off on our lot at 1481 Broadway, Route 1 South Saugus, MA 01906.
